Two Renton City Council members will be running for a position on the King County Council.
Current Renton City Council members Ryan McIrvin and Kim-Khánh Văn will both be running for the metropolitan King County Council District No. 5. They will be running against four other candidates for the open position: Ahmad Corner, Peter Kwon, Steffanie Fain and Angela Henderson.
Former Tukwila City Council member De’Sean Quinn was appointed to fill the position in Jan. 2025 after the former council member for District No. 5, Dave Upthegrove, was elected as Washington State Lands Commissioner. Quinn is not running for re-election this year.
District 5 includes the cities of Des Moines, Kent, Normandy Park, Renton, SeaTac and Tukwila.
McIrvin is currently serving his third term on the Renton City Council and his term is set to expire in 2027. He is currently serving as Chair on the Transportation/Aviation Committee, vice chair on the Planning and Development Committee and a member of the Finance Committee.
Văn is currently serving her second term on the Renton City Council and her term is also set to expire in 2027. She is currently serving as chair on the Utilities Committee, vice chair on the Community Services Committee and a member on the Planning and Development Committee.
According to Renton policy and procedures, if McIrvin or Văn win the county council position, their position on Renton City Council will be declared vacant and the council will appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy by majority vote. The appointee will then serve on the council “until such time as a person is elected and certified to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term at the next regular municipal election.”
The primary election will be on Aug. 5 and the general election will be on Nov. 4. Visit the King County Elections website for more information.
