Hazen’s Angelica Nguyen takes eighth in heptathlon

The soon to be senior sits second in Hazen history and eyes the top spot.

Hazen High School junior Angelica Nguyen might not have made the state championships in May, but in the first week of June, she placed eighth in the heptathlon at the Washington State Combined Events Championships.

Nguyen finished inside the top eight in two events, but she never finished outside the top 20 in any of the seven events. Her total of 3,697 points is her own personal outdoor record.

Her best event of the day was the 200 meter dash where she ran a 27.11, taking seventh place. In the long jump, Nguyen jumped 15-9 1/4.

In the 800, she placed 10th, and in 100 hurdles, took 11th. In the throws, Nguyen took 13th in shot put and 14th in the javelin.

Nguyen’s high jump of 4-5 1/2 was her lowest finish, placing 19th out of the 32 athletes.

“We’re super proud at how hard Angelica fought for 2 long days and 7 events,” Hazen head track coach Buddy Ryan said.

Nguyen also has a chance to break into the Hazen record books as she currently sits second in the heptathlon in Hazen history. Olivia Conklin is the current heptathlon record holder for the Highlanders with a score of 4,622 during her senior year back in 2022.
